Kara Yorio, hockey columnist for the Sporting News, offers NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman a list of five ways to make the NHL better. I normally don't read the Sporting News, but I sure hope that this "column" isn't typical of what they normally produce. In it, Yorio suggests that the league decrease ticket prices AND shorten the season by 10 games. Sure, lower ticket prices will be better for the fans because more people will be able to attend the games. And less games will be better for the players because there will be less wear and tear on them throughout the year. But I don't see how these would be better for the league. While lower ticket prices would probably mean an increase in demand, that increase in demand would not be big enough to offset the loss in revenue (gate, concessions, parking, broadcast fees, etc.) stemming from 10 fewer games. I fail to see how these suggestions would make the league stronger. Any attempt to improve the league has to start with the next collective bargaining agreement. Until they can get the owners and players to agree on an economic structure that makes sense for the league and its popularity (or lack thereof) level, any other radical changes would have minimal chance for success.

I think, without a doubt, Michael Jackson is the scariest person to ever walk the earth. A couple of articles have been written about him in advance of the TV documentary on his life later this week. Read them here and here.
